Police throughout the county are honored for their service and accomplishments.

Distinguished service award 2023

Sheriff Tony Guy received the 39th Annual Distinguished Service Award for 2023. Sheriff Guy was chosen by previous award recipients, and Captain Jonathan Hall (President, Beaver Valley Chiefs of Police Association) presented the award to him. Sheriff Guy is a retired Pennsylvania State Police officer. During this time, he served in various capacities, including as a member of the vice unit, motorcycle patrol, and Special Emergency Response Team. He was a Polygraph Examiner and Criminal Investigations Section Supervisor. He was also part of security following the September 11, 2001, Flight 93, attack in Shanksville. He currently serves as the elected Beaver County Sheriff. Sheriff Guy is a lifelong resident of Beaver County.

 

2023 AWARDS

Beaver County District Attorney David J. Lozier presented several awards to officers at the Beaver County Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial Service:

  • The Detective Howard W. Murray Award to Officers Jared Rogers and Robert Clark, Hopewell Township Police Department, and Pennsylvania State Police Beaver Criminal Investigations Unit.

  • The Sergeant Guy W. “Tippy” Tyler Award to Officer Benjamin Fenchak, Raccoon Township Police Department, and Sergeant Shawn Shillingburg, Conway Police Department.

  • The Drug Enforcement Award to Officer Michael Scheers, Harmony Township Police Department.

  • The Special Victim Unit Award to Officer Keith Smith, New Brighton Boro Police Department.

Millie Anderson, Advocacy Coordinator at the Women’s Center of Beaver County, also presented two awards:

  • Exemplary service in handling sexual assault cases to State Trooper Clayton McGeary (not pictured). Accepting on his behalf was State Trooper Bufello.

  • Exemplary service in handling domestic violence cases to Officer A.J. Bialik, Ambridge Police Department.

 

Police Retirees

Captain Jonathan Hall presented police officer retirees with plaques on May 19 at the annual memorial service to honor their years of service:

  • Chief George Yaccich, 26 years of service to Rochester Township Police Department

  • Chief Ronald P. Leindecker, 30 years of service to New Sewickley Township Police Department

  • Chief Frank Mercier, 29 years of service to Rochester Borough Police Department

  • Captain Peter J. Benedict, 27 years of service to Brighton Township Police Department

  • Deputy Director Frank Parris, 27 years of service to the Beaver County Emergency Response Center.

Beaver County Sheriff Tony Guy presented K9 Officer Ruke with a retirement plaque for his loyal and dedicated service to his community and partner Deputy Jim Brown.

 

Accreditation

New Sewickley Township Police Department became the first police department in Beaver County to be fully accredited by the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission. To be accredited, the department had to meet 140 standards and 100 sub-sections of those standards. The process took ten years to accomplish and emphasizes transparency and accountability. The formal accreditation was awarded on August 4 in Harrisburg.
